Pehi’s Bluff sits south of the Bruce Road, an easy 45-minute walk from the carpark at the start of the Round the Mountain Track (E-1819412, N-5654488). I’d climbed there once before, but this was a first for my climbing partner for the day, Will Young.
Pehi is a great stack of cracks and corners, terrific for natural pro climbing, and improving our gear placement was the aim for the day. We were keen to try out a pile of new hardware that needed wearing in.
The bluff (E-1819353, N-5653020) sits at 1,700m, alpine in both environment and views, and a little more remote than the nearby Meads Wall. It ticked the boxes for today. With most of the climbs in the 14-16 grade range, we had good opportunity to concentrate on gear placement rather than the stress of climbing at our limit, a relatively low limit for two old men.
With just the two of us, there was little chance for photography, though a few shots were grabbed on the iPhone. I’ll let the camera do the talking…
